GADDINGS DAM

A historic moorland reservoir above Todmorden.

Gaddings Dam is an earth embankment reservoir built in 1833, high on the moors between Todmorden and Walsden. It was created to supply water to the mills at Lumbutts, and it’s been part of local life ever since.

It’s also home to Gaddings Beach — often described as one of the highest beaches in England — a spot many local people remember from childhood.

In 2001, the dam was due to be drained because it had fallen into poor condition. A determined group of local people stepped in, bought it, carried out essential repairs, and continue to maintain it today.

This website explains the dam, how to visit responsibly, and how the Gaddings Dam Group keeps it safe and protected.
